The United Brotherhood of Carpenters represents the following crafts and specialty workers. As a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, you can develop your skills in one or more of these specialties:
Acoustical Applicators
Acoustical applicators use wood, metal, mineral, and synthetic materials to insulate commercial and residential buildings against sound and thermal factors.
Allied Occupations
Allied occupations is the term used for carpenters who become foremen, superintendents, estimators, building inspectors, contractors, welders, mobile home plant workers, engineer’s aids, and the like.
Cabinet Makers and Millmen
Cabinet makers and millmen work in special wood shops constructing wood, metal and plastic cabinets, a variety of store fixtures, and other prefabricated items used in the construction industry.
Drywall Applicators
Drywall applicators hang sheetrock and construct interior walls in most commercial and residential buildings.
General Carpenters
General carpenters perform a variety of carpentry jobs and work in a variety of settings. They build everything from homes and factories to dams and bridges. A general carpenter also works with a variety of tools, equipment and building materials.
Lathers
Lathers construct walls and ceilings which provide the framework for plastered walls and ceilings.
Millwrights
Millwrights specialize in machinist or metal work. Their work involves the installation (new construction) and maintenance of machinery in production plants and factories.
Piledrivers
Piledrivers install wood, steel and concrete piling for docks, piers and foundation systems used in the construction of buildings, bridges and roadways. Piledrivers also build many other concrete and steel structures. Commercial sea divers work with piledrivers.
Scaffold Erector
Scaffold erectors erect, move and dismantle scaffolding and shoring in refineries, shipyards, buildings, and other structures under construction or repair.
Shipwrights and Boat Builders
These carpenters work in shipyards constructing everything from external shoring and scaffolding to interior paneling and cabinets. They also construct business and recreational crafts. Shipwrights and boat builders divide their work between the construction of new ships and the repair of old.
Trade Show Workers
Trade show workers install and dismantle simple and complex displays for home shows, boat shows and other exhibitions.
When you chose an area of specialization, it is important to consider the working environment of each trade. For example, cabinet makers, millwrights, house builders, and acoustical applicators usually work inside or under cover. Pilebucks and many general carpenters work outside and often under unstable or even hazardous conditions. While a carpenter’s work week is set at eight hour days, forty hour weeks, there can be overtime during a project and layoffs at the end. |
